Illinois
Tax Lien Certificates
Under Illinois
law, the Treasurer's Office is required to conduct two types of real
estate tax sales in which delinquent property taxes are sold. The first
is the Annual Tax Sale, held once a year, sometime after the second
installment. The sale might be held any time from the Fall
of that year to the Spring of the following year. The second is
the biennial Scavenger Sale (conducted in odd-numbered years), which
offers tax deeds on properties that have delinquencies of two or more
years that were not purchased at the annual tax sales.
Sales are normally
conducted during the summer months.
